August: So long summer. Hello future.

August always brings a mix of feelings for me. I don’t enjoy seeing end but I am always excited for the new possibilities that come with the onset of fall. This year was no different. But I find myself thinking about the future more and more.

I think about where my career will take me and what direction I want to go in. I think about how I can grow as a journalist and a photographer. I am excited for the possibilities and nervous are the risk.

Here is a small collection of images from my work in August. Thanks for looking.

Feeding the beast: May, June, July

The past few months have been quite a race. We had several teams in the running for state titles in spring sports, two military funerals within a month of each other and countless other things have gone on. I have not been able to make much time to shoot for myself and I haven’t been making as many photos for myself while out on assignment.

But here are a handful of images that I am drawn too when I look back over my work during the last several months. As usual I am going to try and update this blog more regularly. I have a few ideas on how to make myself update more often so hopefully they payoff. Thanks for looking.

First Four Months

I say this every time I write an update for this blog, so here it goes again. I am going to try and update more often.

Things have been pretty hectic over the first part of the year. It has been just over four months now since I joined The Herald-News as a staff photographer. This blog consist of images that span that first four months.

In that time I have had some truly wonderful experiences. The community has welcomed the paper back with wide open arms and people are so wonderful.

I cannot put to words the amount of positive energy I get when I tell someone I am with the paper and they say how happy they are to have us back in the community. I am incredibly honored that these people have let me into their lives to share there stories with the world.

I also had the privlage during the last four months to attend my third NPPA Northern Short Course and the second TID Workshop. I love the workshop experience and I feel that every time I attend a new one I gain a new piece of knowledge that I did not before.

In addition just being in that atmosphere is exhilarating. Being surrounded by so many wonderful people doing great things always serves as a reminder to why I do this.

I am excited about the future and what is to come. For now please enjoy these photographs.

Thank you for reading and looking.

Favorite of 2013 and a new begining

image

I am finally getting around to posting my favorite images of the 2013 year, along with a new blog entry format. Instead of just posting work from a given period of time I am going to reflect a little as well.

image

2013 was a whirlwind of a year. At the beginning of the year I moved to Chicago to try my hand a freelancing. Shortly after my move I accepted an internship at the Northwest Herald where I spent most of they year working at the paper in the Chicago suburbs.

image

While working at the Northwest Herald I got to cover a long list of first including my first NFL games and my first NHL game during game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals. I also got to meet some amazing people and help tell some inspiring stories.

With the year now over I look back over my work and am proud at the things I have been able to accomplish. This is just a small selection of my favorite images from over the year. It is always hard to look back over your work and find the best or even the favorites. Each image tells it own story and is a favorite for many reasons.

image

As I look toward the future I am truly excited. In the last few weeks of 2013 I began working as staff photographer for The Herald-News in Joliet just southwest of Chicago. The parent company of the Northwest Herald purchased The Herald-News and asked me to join the staff.
2014 is going to be an exciting year. For now please enjoy some of my work from 2013 and thank you for looking.
